IWNHAS – Archaeology Section

 Forthcoming Events

Whilst Archaeology Section meetings and outings are included in the Society’s annual programme, there are a number of events which are planned at short notice, such as responding to coastal erosion or requests from landowners.

Anyone interested in these activities should consult this website for current details.

If you would like to be added to the E-mailing list please contact either:

delianfry@hotmail.com              rosemount25@yahoo.co.uk

We meet most Wednesdays at 10.00 a.m. throughout the year and occasionally at weekends.

Projects have included monitoring eroding sites around the coast, field walking and dowsing, recording old walls, sieving mud from the bed of the Solent for HWTMA.

Because of the nature of the activities some outings may only be planned at 24 hrs notice, but we will endeavour to post details on this site.

Brading Villa Big Dig:  August, 2010

This event saw Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe again leading a team of archaeologists on an excavation of parts of the site.

The main focus was on the Late Iron Age occupation site that has been identified beneath the field next to the car park.

A number of IWNHAS members were involved as diggers and 'topside' workers.

Several interesting features and numerous finds offered a fascinating insight to life at Brading before the Roman invasion.

Visit to Maiden Castle, Dorset, June 21st, 2009

Below the  Ground
The IWNHAS has been awarded a grant for geophysical equipment and training to enable us to carry out a 5 year project to survey and record possible sites of archaeological interest. These sites have been identified from aerial photographs.Project manager is Ruth Waller, County Archaeologist.   Training is by Wessex Archaeology.
Training has now started and takes place on various Wednesdays and at weekends.  After the initial weekend with Wessex Archaeology we are practising on selected sites.  As well as setting up grids and operating the equipment on site, we also have to
download and interpret the data using 'Geoplot'.
For more details or to register interest please contact Delian Fry.

'Neolithic' Pottery manufacture

A small group has experimented with making Neolithic style pottery, using clay collected on the island. The pots were fired in a modern kiln for the sake of convenience and to enable us to focus on exploring materials and designs.

Many thanks to Rebecca Mitchelmore for leading the activity.  We hope to repeat this, so watch this space for further details.
